How Does PRP Hair Loss Therapy Work to Increase Hair Density?

PRP is prepared from your own blood by spinning your blood in an FDA approved PRP system for a high concentration of healthy platelets. Your PRP is injected into the scalp where is works through the release of eight growth factors. These growth factors lead to new hair growth by the following mechanisms:

  • Stimulating your local dormant hair follicles to generate new hair on the scalp
  • Migration of your own undifferentiated stem cells into the newly formed matrix and triggering cell division for generation of new hairs. The stem cell migration is augmented when ACell is used in the PRP mixture before injection into the scalp
  • Reducing inflammation by suppressing cytokine release, less inflammation means better hair regeneration
  • Improving repair and regeneration by attracting macrophages which are responsible for cleaning up the inflammatory response
  • Promoting new capillary growth (new blood vessel formation) for better circulation and nutrition

We recommend PRP therapy and PRP + ACell therapy to increase hair density and hair quality for the following types of hair loss conditions:*

PRP + ACell Hair Therapy for Androgenic Alopecia in Men

Androgenic alopecia or male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) in men often presents as a receding hairline. Hair loss can start as early as in the late teen years. By the age of 50 years, male pattern hair loss affects about 50% of males. Male pattern hair loss is believed to be due to a combination of genetics and the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. There is no treatment that will reverse the hair loss permanently. Early intervention leads to best results. We have found PRP + Acell to be a very safe and effective treatment for our patients with mild to moderate hair loss with little or no scarring due to androgenic alopecia.

For most patients with male pattern baldness, we recommend a series of TWO PRP + ACell hair regeneration treatments, 6-8 weeks apart followed by a single treatment every 8-12 months to maintain the results.

For milder and early pattern hair loss, PRP alone may be sufficient to increase hair density and quality. We have found that PRP alone treatments need to be done more frequently to achieve and maintain the results. We typically recommend FOUR  to SIX PRP alone hair regeneration treatments, ONE month apart followed by a single treatment every four to six months for maintenance of the results.

PRP Alone and PRP + ACell Hair Therapy for Androgenic Alopecia in Women

Androgenic alopecia or female-pattern hair loss (FPHL)in women is hair loss that primarily affects the top and front of the scalp and typically starts off as a thinning of the hair. Androgenic hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss and by the age of 50 years, it affects about 25% of all women. Early intervention is key yo optimum results. For patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, hair regrowth is a challenge and medical management of PCOS is needed for optimum results.

For most patients with male pattern baldness, we recommend a series of TWO PRP + ACell hair regeneration treatments, 2-3 months apart followed by a single treatment every 8-12 months to maintain the results.

For milder and early pattern hair loss, PRP alone may be sufficient to increase hair density and quality. We have found that PRP alone treatments need to be done more frequently to achieve and maintain the results. PRP Hair Therapy for Telogen Effluvium

Telogen Effluvium (TE)is a reversible hair loss condition which is characterized by a sudden and excessive generalized hair loss after a period of significant stress. Telogen effluvium affects men and women of all ages. Most common causes are hair loss weeks after a major surgery, childbirth, major emotional stress, severe iron deficiency, medical illness, certain medications, poor nutrition, crash diet, starting or stopping birth control pills.

Telogen effluvium can occur along with androgenic alopecia. TE occurs due to pushing of 10%-20% of hair follicles into resting phase (telogen phase). Most cases of TE regress completely with regrowth of hair after correction of the trigger. PRP hair loss therapy can help convert resting phase hair follicles (telogens) into active growth phase hair follicles (anagen phase) and is an option for those with slow recovery, suboptimal a recovery and with presence of androgenic alopecia alongside TE

For telogen effluvium treatment with PRP, we recommend between two to three PRP hair loss therapy sessions, six to eight week apart. We evaluate your results 6 weeks after each treatment to determine the need for further treatments to get optimum hair growth.

PRP Hair Therapy for Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease characterized by spots of complete hair loss on the scalp and/or other areas of the body due to destruction of hair follicles by body’s immune system. The non-scarring type of alopecia area is reversible and traditionally treated with an injection of steroids into the hair loss area. PRP offers a more natural and better treatment option for alopecia areata.
