Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIP) are very diferent disorders from the surface brown spots commonly associated with sun exposure, solar lentigo (liver spots). Unlike liver spots, treating excess pigment in melasma and PIP is challenging and can be associated with side effects such as excessive skin irritation which can parodically lead to worsening of pigmentation.

Treatments like IPL photorejuvenation used effectively to get rid of solar lentigo pigmentation do not work for melasma and PIP and may even worsen the latter.
